Holly Humberstone - NX, Newcastle

Followed by the opening performance from local artist, LDevine, Humberstone took stage at Newcastle’s very own NX, formerly known as the O2 Academy.

Holly opened up the stage with the title track of her debut EP ‘The Walls Are Way Too Thin’. Welcoming her onto the stage, a crowd full of rowdy Geordies cheered for the 22 year old Grantham artist. Instantly, you could see love and passion fill Humberstone’s eyes, and the heart-warming atmosphere was shared across the room between fans.

A few songs into the set, Holly took a moment to say, “How amazing it is to be back in Newcastle” and how she, “Wrote this next song about when I first moved to London and I felt a bit isolated. It is clear to see Newcastle is a community and everyone is so friendly up here whereas in London you just feel lonely, so this next song you probably can guess is ‘London Is Lonely’.” Instantly there was a wave of cheers and clapping as the crowd supported Holly throughout this meaningful and close to home song.

Just as Humberstone was about to play her debut single ‘Deep End’, which was released in January 2020, she dedicated it to her sister knowing a lot of the crowd could relate to the meaningful and expressive lyrics of the track.

One of the night’s best highlights was when the song, ‘Falling Asleep At The Wheel’ was performed with the Indie Rock artist, now behind the keys. Red and blue, siren-like lights flooded over the crowd throughout the performance . Although this was deliberate, it was an attentive detail, giving the gig that extra immersive experience.

Humberstone thanked the crowd for being there this evening and told the room, “The last time I performed here was just over a year ago and the next time I will be here i’ll be supporting the one and only Sam fender at St James Park. UP THE TOON!”. The artist and her three piece band left the stage for the encore and after many chants of, “One more song! One more song! One more song!” all four of them made themselves present back on the stage to perform fan favourite ‘Scarlett’. The crowd sang the lyrics back to Holly so loud it almost became impossible to hear Humberstone herself. She thanked the crowd one last time before disappearing off stage leaving Newcastle with another unforgettable performance.
