Interview with Daniel Maple

Tell me a bit about yourself, what have you been up to over the past 12 months?

The last 12 months have been very busy for both my solo career and the band. I've had an amazing experience playing with Pretty Velvet and done some of my first gigs outside of the North East this year. I've also been writing 2 songs a day (sometimes even more) and I'm very excited to get some of them best songs out.

What has been the biggest highlight of making music so far?

Although it is quite simplistic, I think the biggest highlight of making music for me are the projects I have self produced recently. It's something really exciting to be creating and I feel very free to do whatever I want with the music.

So how did you first get into making music?

I wanted to recreate the music I was listening to, which inspired me to start writing original compositions. From there, I realised the impact that songs can have which drew me to focus on the various methods of songwriting.

How would you describe your sound?

I would describe my sound as eclectic. It ranges in genre and emphasises on dynamic changes. However, I tend to adapt between the different projects I am involved with.

Do you have any pre-gig rituals and if so, what are they?

The pre gig rituals that spring to mind are

blackcurrant and water to prepare my voice, and I'll usually change into my stage outfit an hour before I'm due on.

What was the process like in recording your EP?

The main studio that I've recorded in has been 'House of Sound' in Harrogate. This is where the entirety of the Pretty Velvet EP 'The Story of Missy & Johnny" was recorded with the help of our producer, George. It was a positive, memorable experience to be a part of them tracks and I'd reccomend it to other artists.

If they could be in any film, what one would it be in?

I think that the songs from the EP would fit well into a Tarrantino movie, perhaps 'Once Upon A Time In The Hollywood'. They all fit into the 60s rock sound that the film encapsulates.

So what is next for you?

I'm planning to be releasing some solo tracks over the next year and I'm interested in starting new projects with various artists, whilst also continuing my journey with Pretty Velvet.
