Interview with SOVEREIGNS

Tell me a bit about yourselves, what have you been up to over the past 12 months?

Right, well we're Sovereigns a rock band from Essex, London. We've only been a band for just over a year so the last 12 months was basically starting the band. We have toured the country and released our first EP and played some really good shows. But yeah we've just been touring loads and writing a lot and learning what its like to be a proper touring band.

Where did your bands name come from/how did the band form?

A ring, this ring. So we didn't know what to call the band, and we were going to be called 'The Jockey," but I feel like bands with "the" in them are way too 'The Strokes'. Even though we love those bands, everyone has a "the" in front of them. So, we went with Sovereigns rather than 'The Sovereigns,' just Sovereigns.

What is your earliest memory of music?

Teletubbies!!! Yeah I guess nursery rhymes. Nursery rhymes were everyone's first exposure to music. And the 1975, doc martens and Matty Healy, that's what I discovered.

What are some of your main musical influences?

Well we started off on Oasis.

And The Stone Roses.

Probably The Strokes.

Then we've got mini Dave Grohl over here.

If you could headline any festival, which one would you choose?

Reading! Oooo oh I think you'd have to say Glastonbury. Reading has gotten so bad over the years. Reading was 100% certain ten years ago, but Glastonbury is now 100% certain. I think TRNSMT would be a good one I like the idea of playing in Scotland. Even to play but headlining would be great. Just anywhere.

If your music could be in any film, what would it be?

Trainspotting. Trainspotting 3. Some sort of just dingy, disgusting, coming of age movie so basically Trainspotting. I think Oasis The Reunion, The film though you would think they would use Oasis in that. That's what we should do for it not putting any Oasis in the Oasis film just to throw people off.

If you could have any celebrity to star in your music video, who would it be?

Anya Taylor-Joy, I love her so much.

Alex Lawther from 'The End Of The F***ing World' yeah he's cool.

I don't have a clue, I don't keep up with celebrities. Oh Morgan Freeman, yeah, definitely!

Willem Dafoe, that's a good one.

What's the funniest thing that has happened whilst performing?

Elliot fell over at our biggest headline show at 'The Grace' in London, it was sold out and Elliot fell over his amp just before he was about to play a solo. But he did end up picking it up and setting it up again in time to play it. It was so embarrassing but it was probably one of the funniest. I had to carry on singing and laughing but yeah that was pretty funny.

What's next for you?

Next EP, EP 2 is coming out in May. Two of our biggest headline shows in London and Manchester. So we are playing the o2 Academy 2 in Islington which is huge for us because we used to go to loads of gigs there when we were younger. We did 'The Grace' and the next one up is the o2 Academy and I've went to shows there just over a year ago and I went to see BILK there and now we're playing it. They've played it and so can I and we actually are.
