The Amazons - Boiler Shop, Newcastle

Fresh off supporting rock duo Royal Blood, the Amazons hit the road for their own headline tour.

With three dates left of their tour, The Amazons took stage at the sold out Boiler Shop, Newcastle after support act, 21 year old, local artist Lizzie Esau. The band teamed up with BBC introducing for their tour supports which were all bands were local to that nights gig.

The 4 piece rock band opened up their set with a recently released euphoric hit being the title track from their album, ‘How Will I Know If Heaven Will Find Me.’ Instantly, the crowd filled the room with loud bursts of screams and echoes as everyone chanted along to the lyrics, word for word.

Even though their third record has only been released for a month, fans shown the band their level of dedication and support, knowing every one of the hits from the new album.

The four lads continued to play their set, sending the crowd wild, song after song. Front man, Matt Thomas took a moment to tell the crowd ‘We wouldn't expect anything less from Newcastle, so thank you for giving us this, especially on a Monday night’.

The opening chords of Northern Star, the band’s heartfelt acoustic-anthem, filled the room as people began to reach for their flashlights. One by one, they began to pop up above heads, swaying gently to the music. The backdrop turned into a replica of the nights sky, with twinkling lights mimicking stars. It was such a wholesome and picturesque part of their set and you could feel that energy between, both the band mates, and the fans alike.

The lads then soon gathered around the mic together, as they played an acoustic version of ‘Nightdriving’ which is a beautiful contrast to their original more heavy beat version of this song which was released back in 2016. Although the acoustic songs were greatly appreciated by the crowd, It was noticed that Newcastle definitely favoured the more heavier and hard hitting type of songs.

As the band were in Newcastle, frontman Matt took a minute to pay tribute and speak a few words about the local geordie legend Sam Fender, after his recent post on instagram last month, announcing he was postponing his America tour dates and taking a mental health break. The crowd soon silenced as Matt said ‘I think it takes a lot of strength to do what he did. When you put on a show it's not just you, the whole team behind you are on a payroll and their whole livelihood is dependent on you doing a show. Sometimes it takes tremendous strength to put yourself first, for your mental and physical well being. It's a weird world to come back and tour in and you've probably seen a lot of artists having to pull out of gigs and tours. It's hard and taxing on the body and takes incredible courage to do the right thing and take a moment. This one's for you buddy.’ Three of the band members then played an acoustic version of Fender’s ‘Seventeen Going Under’ which instantly shot the crowd into bursts of cheering as a song from everyone's favourite local hero was being performed.

After a mosh-pit fuelled encore, the band thanked the crowd for the best night. Throwing guitar picks and drumsticks into the crowd as they exit the stage, leaving the rowdy Geordies with even more love for the band than what they had before the unforgettable performance that they experienced tonight.

Walking away from the venue, we were left feeling sweaty, and excited by the performance they just gave us. Hoping it is not too long till we see the Reading Rockers back in the toon.
